This western German town was once an industrial and mining center, its main product being coal. Today Essen’s former coal mining complex has been turned into a living history museum, the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, which offers interpretive tours to visitors. The city is also home to Villa Hugel, the former home of German industrialist Alfred Krupp, now a museum, and the Red Dot Design Museum. Opened in 1922, Red Dot has is home to a large collection of contemporary industrial and product designs.
