Located on the Nile River, Giza is home to some of Egypt’s most well known ancient tombs, pyramids and monuments. The city is a major tourist destination. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, Giza’s largest, was the tomb of King Khnum Khufu, who died around 2567 BCE. Giza is also home to the famous Great Sphinx of Giza, a statue of a seated sphinx that is about 4,500 years old and approximately 240 feet long. The Khufu Ship Museum was built in 1985 to house an ancient wooden ship discovered near the Great Pyramid. The ship was meant to transport kings to the afterlife.
